the handbook

scale

a growing set of hands-on courses for engineers and leaders shipping real organizations — team topologies, accelerate/dora, continuous delivery, platform, incidents, strategy. practice, not theory.

what /scale/ is

the /scale/ pillar is for senior engineers, tech leads, and engineering managers who are responsible for how a team or organization performs — not just how individual code performs. the throughline: the shape of the system follows the shape of the org, and the wrong org shape costs more in lost throughput than any framework choice ever will. we work from named, measurable frameworks (team topologies, accelerate/dora) rather than opinions about what "good" looks like.

how the lessons work

every /scale/ course pairs the framework with an interactive exercise: a sorter for team types, a scenario quiz for interaction modes, a weighted calculator for cognitive load, an anti-pattern spotter for failure modes. you read the chapter, then you classify a fictional org against it. the score is local — nothing leaves your browser — and the wrong answers come with reasoning, not just a red x.

what makes this different

most management content lives at the airport-bookshop level of abstraction. the courses here go in the other direction: short, specific, reproducible. written from a working engineering manager's seat — leading a multi-team area in finance, with the developer → tech lead → staff engineer → manager arc behind it. opinions are owned, citations are inline.

  1. enablement isn't evangelismthe tools are landed, and people are already doing real work with them. the job now is widening the circle and turning early wins into shared habit
  2. meaningful reportingan integration problem before it's a writing problem. the executive summary wants to be a script, not a calendar slot
  3. the production readiness reviewa checklist with teeth, run before ship
  4. the senior ic who isn't a leadthe role exists. most companies forget to name it
